I start with vintage discarded photographs, found in antique store bargain bins, old family albums, and local history archives. These scenes are translated into paint and charcoal, altered to suggest dream and nostalgia, with compositions that allow for open narrative. Working in a painterly style, I use drawing and paint media to create ambiguity. I allow marks, brushstrokes, and drips to form veils. Like a fuzzy memory, some elements are concealed or revealed through my interpretation. I want the viewer to discover their own story, a voyeuristic glimpse into a past that feels familiar, but may have never occurred. I want to tap into collective memory to explore the stories we construct about our pasts and ourselves.
