Color Theory Oil Painting Class

When you register, please select the session dates you are registering for from the following 3 options:

Option 1: Wed July 6 - 9AM - 12PM

Option 2: Wed July 13 - 9AM - 12PM

Option 3: Wed July 20 - 9AM - 12PM

Workshop Description:

The students will learn about color theory and apply a new one each week. The first week they will do a limited palette with Thalo blue, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, cadmium yellow and naples yellow. Week 2 Triadic color and week 3 an expanded analogous color. I recommend toning your canvas yellow ochre thinned with liquin at lease 3 days before class.

Class Audience:

Adult and High School Aged Students

Class Experience Level: All experience levels

Class Size: 6 maximum per session

Workshop Fees:

  • Members: $50 per session ($150 for all 3)

  • Non-Members: $65 per session ($195 for all 3)

Registration Options:

Payment due in advance of each session, including the day of. Drop-ins are welcome, space permitting.

Cancellation Policy:

You will forfeit 50% of deposit if one week notice is not given.

Required Supplies:

For the oil color theory class each day we will try a different color theory. I will provide colors not on my materials list. Subject: your choice & your photo. Bring a canvas. Tone it with yellow Ochre. 

  • July 6: Limited Palette, burnt sienna, thalo blue, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow & naples yellow

  • July 13: Triadic

  • July20:  Analogous color: a color family expanded

Oil Paints:

Alizarin Crimson*

Burnt Sienna*

Cadmium red light

Cadmium Yellow

Naples Yellow*

Thalo Blue*

Titanium White*

Ultramarine Blue*

Viridian Green*

Yellow Ochre

*colors are a must.

Brushes & Misc:

Filbert Brushes#1, #2, #3, & #6.  I use Utrecht Series 209.

(If you already have filberts, bring what you have.)

Canvas size of your choice.

Liquin Original

Turpenoid

Metal cup for turpenoid

Rags or paper towels

Palette, large, your choice                   

French Easel or bring what you have. If you sit the art center has easels to use.
